The World's Rarest and Most Valuable Purple Sapphire: A Stunning Discovery in Sri Lanka
Jakarta, CNN Indonesia --
A breathtaking 3,563-carat purple sapphire, valued at a staggering US$300 million (approximately Rp5.06 trillion), is on display in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on January 17th. This extraordinary gem, named the 'Star of Holy Land', is the largest natural purple sapphire ever documented, according to renowned gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe.
Amarasinghe estimates its value to be around US$300 million to US$400 million (approximately Rp5.06 trillion to Rp6.06 trillion) based on international appraisals. He emphasizes, 'This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind.'
The gem showcases a remarkable asterism, a celestial phenomenon where six rays form a distinct pattern, setting it apart from other stones. Asterism, as defined by Britannica, is a cluster of stars forming a recognizable pattern visible to the naked eye.
The Star of Holy Land is owned by an anonymous group known as the Star of Holy Land Team, prioritizing security. The sapphire was discovered in a remote Rathnapura mine, known as the 'gem city' of Sri Lanka, in 2023.
Acquired alongside other gems that year, the owners realized its uniqueness two years later. They obtained certifications from two laboratories, solidifying its exceptional status. Sri Lankan sapphires are renowned for their distinct characteristics, including color, clarity, and unique brilliance.
