In an exclusive interview with AFP, Bienvenu, a 38-year-old comic book illustrator, shares his unique perspective on awards, describing them as both a blessing and a curse. "They create pressure for the future," he reveals. But here's where it gets controversial... Bienvenu chose to create something new, opting for an original story instead of adapting his graphic novels for Hollywood.
'Arco,' a tale of friendship and ecological consciousness, has already won the top prize at the Annecy animation festival. Set in a world where humanity mistreats the planet, the story follows Arco, a boy from a distant future, and Iris, a little girl from a not-so-distant future, as they navigate their unique friendship and the challenges of their respective worlds.
"Don't lie to children," Bienvenu emphasizes, hoping his fable will serve as a reminder of the truth we often shield from the younger generation. With heat waves and fires becoming an annual occurrence, Bienvenu wants to send a powerful message: "This is the world you live in, but it's not hopeless."
The utopian tale, crafted entirely in 2D with a dreamy score, has drawn comparisons to the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. However, Bienvenu faced challenges during production, with producers questioning the absence of an obvious villain. "The system in which we live is the antagonist," he argues.
To bring 'Arco' to life, Bienvenu took a bold step, investing his personal savings into creating an animatic, a black-and-white animated storyboard, to win over investors. His perseverance paid off, attracting the attention of Mountain A, the production company run by Portman and Sophie Mas.
Portman herself has praised 'Arco,' stating her desire to create films that build a better world for children. Bienvenu, a father of two, admits that becoming a parent influenced his shift towards a more optimistic tone, moving away from the cynicism of his past projects.
"I wanted to create light, not darkness," he explains.
Bienvenu's hopes extend beyond personal success; he aims to inspire France's animation industry, encouraging creators to embrace sincerity and authenticity.
"If we do things sincerely, people will be moved," he asserts.
