Tanzania's Energy Revolution: Unveiling Smart Meters for a Brighter Future (2026)

Bold claim: Tanzania’s energy sector just leapfrogged into the digital age with the launch of smart electricity meters. This move promises a faster, more transparent way for millions to purchase and access power, signaling a notable shift in how TANESCO delivers services.

The new system was unveiled by Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi and introduced at a formal ceremony on December 5, 2025, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC). The event drew government officials, energy stakeholders, and TANESCO executives to mark what is described as a historic modernization of utility services.

Minister Ndejembi explained that the smart meters enable customers to receive electricity immediately after buying a token, eliminating the need for an extra input device (CIU). This is intended to resolve many of the friction points observed under the old system.

“Today we celebrate a major milestone by TANESCO—one of the best-performing public institutions in customer service,” he said. He emphasized that the smart meter represents transformative changes in how the utility collects revenue and noted that customer difficulties with token entry had driven the government to pursue these technological reforms.

Ndejembi stressed that adopting modern technology is a significant step for the country and directed TANESCO to roll out the meters widely, especially in high-demand areas, while ensuring compliance with international standards and educating customers about the benefits.

Deputy Energy Minister Salome Makamba framed the launch as a continuation of the government’s commitment to better public services. She highlighted the timing, noting that the event occurred just 33 days after President Samia Suluhu Hassan took office, and described the rollout as a historic milestone for TANESCO customers.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila underscored the need to protect electricity infrastructure and praised TANESCO for strengthening collaboration with security agencies to deter vandalism. He urged ongoing momentum to ensure a reliable power supply.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Energy, Felichesmi Mramba, congratulated TANESCO and noted that smart meter technology will make it easier to identify customer issues even before they are reported.

TANESCO Board Vice Chairperson Ambassador Zuhura Bundala expressed pride in the ongoing digital transformation, saying it motivates the board to steer the utility toward even more advanced digital service delivery.
