This movement has gained traction as players express their dissatisfaction with Anran’s appearance in the game compared to her original design seen in promotional material.
If you take a moment to browse through the comments on any Overwatch-related social media post, you'll likely stumble upon a flood of fans sharing side-by-side comparisons of Anran's in-game model against her depiction in the animated trailer featuring her younger brother, Wuyang, who was introduced as a support hero last year. The contrast is striking: Anran’s initial design showcased sharper facial features and a longer nose, while her current in-game portrayal presents a softer look with a smaller nose and rounder face, drawing unwanted parallels to other characters like Kiriko and Juno. This phenomenon has sparked discussions around what many have termed "same face syndrome," a criticism particularly aimed at the design of female characters in the game, where they often appear too similar to one another.
With fans voicing their concerns more vocally than ever, Andersen stepped into the conversation through a heartfelt video supporting the fan-led initiative for change. She articulated her feelings about the disparity between her envisioned character and the final product, stating, "I had to grieve the difference between the Anran I hoped for and the one we actually received. In the comics and in the cinematic 'Elemental Kin,' there was an implied commitment to challenging the harmful beauty standards that inundate our media today, like the trend of 'ozempic-chic' and the fixation on having an impossibly tiny nose. It’s understandable that this has left many feeling disappointed."
Andersen continued her message by emphasizing Overwatch’s legacy of pushing boundaries: "This game has always been a pioneer in confronting stereotypes and exploring what heroism truly means, both in terms of appearance and character. Unfortunately, the final design doesn’t reflect that bold vision we associate with Overwatch—it leaves an unsatisfactory impression."
She also mentioned that she has communicated these concerns to the Blizzard team and expressed hope that they will consider the feedback from the community. Andersen encouraged others to share their thoughts with a spirit of "boldness and kindness." Given the overwhelming reaction from the community—it's nearly impossible to scroll through Overwatch’s social media without encountering comments on this issue—one might speculate that Blizzard will make some adjustments. However, it’s unlikely that any changes will be implemented immediately. As of now, Anran is available for play during a testing phase and will officially launch on February 10, alongside four other new heroes as part of the game's upcoming season.
While time constraints may prevent Blizzard from altering her appearance before her debut, there remains hope among fans that future updates could bring back some of her more distinctive original features.
