Get ready to blast off! NASA's SpaceX Crew-12 mission is gearing up for an exciting journey to the International Space Station (ISS), slated to launch no earlier than February 15, 2026. This mission isn't just a trip; it's a crucial step in preparing humanity for future adventures to the Moon and Mars.
Leading the charge will be four remarkable crew members representing three space agencies, embarking on a long-duration science expedition. Leading the mission are NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, who will serve as spacecraft commander and pilot, respectively. They'll be joined by ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, both serving as mission specialists. Crew-12 will integrate with the Expedition 74 crew already aboard the ISS.
This mission marks the 12th crew rotation with SpaceX to the orbiting laboratory under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The team will be diving into scientific investigations and technology demonstrations designed to pave the way for future exploration missions. The goal? To not only push the boundaries of space exploration but also to bring benefits back to Earth.
Let's meet the crew:
Jessica Meir: This will be Meir's second spaceflight. Selected as a NASA astronaut in 2013, she brings a wealth of experience, including a bachelor's degree in biology, a master's in space studies, and a doctorate in marine biology. During her first mission (Expedition 61/62), she spent 205 days as a flight engineer and participated in the first three all-woman spacewalks, totaling an impressive 21 hours and 44 minutes.
Jack Hathaway: A commander in the United States Navy, Hathaway was selected in 2021. This will be his inaugural spaceflight. With degrees in physics, history, and flight dynamics, Hathaway is a seasoned pilot with over 2,500 flight hours in 30 different aircraft, including over 500 carrier arrested landings and 39 combat missions.
Sophie Adenot: Adenot's first spaceflight is a significant milestone. She holds a degree in engineering, specializing in spacecraft and aircraft flight dynamics, and a master's in human factors engineering. With a background as a helicopter cockpit design engineer and a search and rescue pilot, Adenot has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours in 22 different helicopters.
Andrey Fedyaev: Fedyaev is no stranger to the ISS, this will be his second long-duration stay. Selected as a cosmonaut in 2012, he has served as a test cosmonaut since 2014. In 2023, he spent 186 days in orbit during the SpaceX Crew-6 mission.
But here's where it gets controversial... The International Space Station has been continuously inhabited for over 25 years, and it's a hub of scientific discovery. The station is a crucial testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long-duration spaceflight.
And this is the part most people miss... As commercial companies step up to provide human space transportation, NASA is shifting its focus to deep space missions, particularly the Artemis campaign, in preparation for future missions to Mars.
