A major shake-up is on the horizon for Michigan football's recruiting staff, as the Kyle Whittingham era begins. The program is set to undergo significant changes, with key personnel departures and replacements expected.
The Future of Michigan Football's Recruiting
First reported by Sam Webb on The Michigan Insider's VIP message boards, General Manager Sean Magee is leaving his post. Magee, who returned to Ann Arbor in 2024 after a stint with the Chicago Bears, played a crucial role in overseeing all aspects of recruiting and player personnel. His official duties included identifying and evaluating prospective athletes, managing the current roster, and coordinating the program's NIL initiatives.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sources have also indicated that Director of Recruiting Sam Popper is considering other opportunities, which could lead to his departure from the Wolverines. Additionally, the program is expected to replace Albert Karschnia, the Director of Player Personnel, and Kayli Johnson, the Director of On-Campus Recruiting.
Karschnia, a U-M alumnus who graduated in 2015, has served as the Director of Recruiting Operations since December 2021. Then-coach Jim Harbaugh praised Karschnia as a trusted and dedicated professional who has built strong relationships with recruits, their families, and the university community. Johnson, who joined Michigan from Michigan State in 2024, has been a valuable asset in on-campus recruiting, leveraging her connections in key recruiting regions like the DMV, Chicago, and Los Angeles through her affiliation with the Sound Mind Sound Body Program.
And this is the part most people miss... These changes come as Michigan prepares for its first season under new head coach Kyle Whittingham, who was hired last December to replace Sherrone Moore. The Wolverines will kick off their spring practices in March and April, leading up to their spring game on April 18. The team's fall schedule includes exciting matchups against Western Michigan, Oklahoma, UTEP, Iowa, and more, with the highly anticipated game against Ohio State taking place on November 28 in Columbus, Ohio.
