The Seattle Mariners are keeping their options open and showing continued interest in re-signing veteran slugger Eugenio Suarez. With their top priority, Josh Naylor, already secured on a five-year deal, and Jorge Polanco's departure to the Mets, the focus now shifts to Suarez's future.
In a recent interview, Mariners GM Justin Hollander expressed his admiration for Suarez, highlighting his impact both on and off the field. Hollander emphasized the unique qualities Suarez brings to the team, stating, "His steady presence and great makeup are invaluable."
The Mariners' initial plan was clear: re-sign Naylor first, followed by Polanco and Suarez. However, with Naylor's early signing, the team gained some flexibility. It remains uncertain whether the Mariners made a formal offer to Suarez or if they were waiting for Polanco's fate to be decided.
But here's where it gets interesting: the Mariners have also been linked to trade targets Brendan Donovan and Ketel Marte. So, any negotiations with Suarez might be on hold until these potential trades are resolved.
If Suarez does return to Seattle, it's likely he'll spend more time as a designated hitter rather than his usual third base position. His defensive metrics have been average to below-average for several years, and his 2025 performance didn't impress.
The Mariners have solid internal options at third base, so their focus has shifted to second base. Suarez's past history with the franchise might be the only reason he's still on their radar as a free agent third baseman.
Other teams, like the Cubs and Red Sox, have also shown interest in Suarez, but it's unclear if they've made formal offers. It's a bit surprising that a player coming off a 49-homer season hasn't generated more buzz, but his age, high strikeout rates, and defensive shortcomings are potential concerns for long-term commitments.
Despite a somewhat cool market, MLB Trade Rumors still ranks Suarez 20th among the top 50 free agents this winter, projecting a three-year, $63MM deal. With plenty of offseason left, the market could still heat up, and Suarez's familiarity with the Mariners and their potential postseason success might give Seattle an edge.
So, will Suarez return to the Pacific Northwest? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the Mariners are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of a strong lineup for the upcoming season.
