Hoi Polloi Academy's Rising Stars Shine Bright: Malta's Theatre Scene Takes Center Stage!
In a remarkable achievement, three young talents from Malta are set to dazzle on the international stage. Emily Dimech, Erika Bonello, and Laura Cardona, students of Hoi Polloi Academy, have been handpicked for the prestigious JTF International All-Stars Programme 2026. This opportunity will see them rubbing shoulders with the world's most promising musical theatre performers.
The selection process was rigorous, with auditions at the Junior Theatre Festival Europe 2025 in Birmingham. And what a year it's been for Hoi Polloi Academy! They also bagged the Achievement in Dance Award for their production of Shrek JR.
But here's where the journey gets even more exciting. These three talented performers will embark on a trip to the cultural hub of New York City in January 2026. There, they'll dive into the creation of a fresh musical theatre production, crafted by the renowned Broadway company iTheatrics. This program unites exceptional young artists from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
During their New York adventure, the students will collaborate with an international cast, attend masterclasses led by Broadway's finest, witness professional shows, and experience the intense rehearsal process of the industry. But wait, there's more! Their journey will then lead them to Atlanta, where they'll take center stage at JTF 2026, the globe's largest youth musical theatre festival.
"This is a dream come true," expressed Hoi Polloi Academy's Artistic Director, Marco Calleja. "Having three of our students chosen is incredible. They embody the spirit of HPA, Malta, and our core values of creativity, teamwork, and personal development."
The preparation for this program is no small feat. The students had to master all musical elements before even setting foot in New York. Rehearsals kick off immediately upon arrival, with casting auditions on day one. Given the tight schedule, participants were granted early access to scripts, vocal recordings, and choreography for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile JR, a brand-new musical in the works.
Their dedication and performance during rehearsals will play a pivotal role in casting decisions and the ensemble's overall triumph.
This achievement is not just a personal triumph for the students but a significant milestone for the entire Hoi Polloi Malta community, encompassing the Academy, Theatre Company, and Creative Hub. All these entities are committed to showcasing Maltese talent on the global stage.
Hoi Polloi Academy is actively seeking sponsorship to support the students' journey, covering travel, accommodation, and participation expenses.
Follow their journey via Hoi Polloi Malta's social media channels as they prepare to showcase Maltese talent on some of the world's most prestigious youth theatre platforms. And remember, this is just the beginning of their story!
Congratulations, Emily, Erika, and Laura! Your hard work and passion are an inspiration to us all. Keep shining and making Malta proud!
