Traffic chaos looms in Middlesbrough as major roadworks kick off, but is it worth the hassle?
Motorists, brace yourselves! The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange is about to become a hotbed of activity, and not in a good way. A massive repair and improvement project is underway, promising months of delays and disruptions. But is this inconvenience a fair price to pay for safer, smoother roads?
As of March 3, traffic maps reveal a sea of red, with lengthy tailbacks on Dixons Bank and the eastbound A174. The culprit? A comprehensive construction plan that includes concrete repairs under the bridge, waterproofing replacement, new kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and enhanced safety measures with pedestrian fencing and vehicle barriers.
But here's where it gets controversial: To manage the works, a continuous contraflow system will be implemented on the A172, reducing traffic flow to a single lane in each direction. This means temporary traffic lights, overnight lane closures, and a ban on right turns when accessing Marton Road via the slip road or crossing the bridge to the A174.
The good news? Middlesbrough Council and Esh Construction have teamed up to keep the bridge open during the works, avoiding lengthy detours. Advanced warning signs will also be placed ahead of any full closures.
So, while the next few months may test the patience of drivers, the long-term benefits could be significant.
And this is the part most people miss: The project is expected to wrap up in autumn 2026, offering a smoother, safer commute for years to come. But is the temporary inconvenience worth the eventual payoff? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
