In a captivating twist of fate, five extraordinary women converged in Rome, summoned by Bulgari and its visionary creative director, Mary Katrantzou. This diverse group, including the iconic supermodel Linda Evangelista, actress Kim Ji-won, the legendary Isabella Rossellini, acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and architect Sumayya Vally, came together for a unique campaign.
The setting was electric as photographer Ethan James Green captured the essence of each woman, under the creative direction of Ferdinando Verderi. The campaign, unveiled six months later, showcased the limited-edition Bulgari Icons minaudière collection, with a special focus on the Serpenti design.
And who better to embody the enigmatic Serpenti than Linda Evangelista? With a career spanning four decades, she has effortlessly transformed into countless personas, gracing the lenses of renowned photographers like Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh, and Irving Penn.
"When I heard there were five styles, I almost asked if I could choose! But then I realized, they're all stunning." Linda shared with WWD, who had the privilege of witnessing this creative process.
Linda's connection with the Serpenti design went beyond aesthetics. It symbolized her personal journey, a metamorphosis both on and off the camera. "I've faced many challenges, but each time, I've learned and grown. Through hardship, you discover what truly matters." she reflected.
The all-white studio set, with Linda donning a pristine suit and the iconic snake-head bag, exuded a relaxed vibe. "This team is amazing, and we're still buzzing from last night's dinner. Everything is so effortless," she remarked, expressing her honor to be part of this project.
Linda's love for Bulgari runs deep. "My first jewelry piece was a Tubogas bracelet from Milan in the '80s, and I still wear it. It's safely tucked away in my hotel room," she reminisced, proudly displaying her newer Serpenti watch.
When asked about the evolution of modeling, Linda emphasized the differences. "It's not better or worse, just different. You must adapt." She recalled the days when photographers used Polaroids and film, and the meticulous attention to detail. "Now, it's all about post-production and digital fixes. I miss being part of that creative process."
She acknowledged the increased content and behind-the-scenes videos, feeding the social media beast, but longed for the simpler times.
"I'm not sure it's easier now. It's a different world, and these young models handle it with ease. I'm not there yet, but I appreciate the good it brings."
Despite the digital noise, the fascination with the '90s supermodel era persists. Linda was surprised to learn that younger generations are discovering her and her peers on TikTok and archival footage. She attributed this enduring charm to the limited exposure of that era.
"Back then, you saw one picture and waited eagerly for the magazine. There was a sense of anticipation. Now, with so much access, it can become overwhelming and forgettable."
But Linda remains excited about the industry's evolution. "I love working with new talent - photographers, makeup artists, and hairdressers. It's all about change, and I embrace it."
Away from the cameras, Linda finds solace in nature and cooking. "I have a bit of OCD, so I love my knives. I take great care of them and enjoy the precision of chopping and preparing meals. I dream of being a sous-chef!"
Even the Bulgari project incorporated this love for food. Each talent was asked to create a personal miniature book, reflecting their life experiences. Linda's pamphlet took readers back to her Italian roots, sharing family anecdotes and the central role of cooking in her upbringing. Her family's traditional "Sunday sugo" tomato sauce recipe was a highlight.
"I consider my family's sauce recipe my most precious inheritance. My grandparents brought it from Italy, and even though they lived a better life in Canada, they held onto these traditions. It's a Sunday ritual for me, my son, and my friends in New York."
Her personal touch? "Freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano, ground pepper, and a sprinkle of basil and chili flakes."
This unique campaign, blending fashion, personal narratives, and culinary traditions, is a testament to the power of creativity and the enduring appeal of iconic figures like Linda Evangelista.
