The Arizona sun shone brightly on a group of young athletes, a diverse cohort of high school baseball prospects from across the nation. This weekend, they were not just there to swing bats and pitch fastballs; they were part of something bigger. The ninth annual DREAM Series, held at the Tempe Diablo Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Angels, was a transformative experience for these aspiring baseball stars.
Over 80 African American prep pitchers and catchers, representing 15 states and Canada, gathered for this unique amateur development program. The event, a collaboration with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, aimed to enrich the talent pool of minority pitchers and catchers, offering them a rare opportunity to shine.
But the DREAM Series is more than just a baseball camp. It's a community initiative. Before stepping onto the field, the players spent Saturday morning giving back to the community. They stuffed duffle bags with everyday essentials for kids involved in The Foster Love Project, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting foster children and families. This act of service not only fostered a sense of empathy but also created a powerful connection between the players and the cause.
The players, many of whom were not much older than the kids they were helping, learned about the organization's mission and each other as they decorated the bags. One of the participants, Devyn Downs, 18, a right-hander from Sterlington, La., humorously admitted, 'We can’t draw.' Despite their lack of artistic skills, the players' commitment to the cause was evident.
This partnership with Foster Love is part of a broader initiative through MLB Together, a program that aims to pledge 250,000 volunteer hours by the end of 2026 to support charitable organizations and local communities nationwide. As Major League Baseball celebrates America's 2550th birthday, MLB Together brings together the efforts of the Commissioner's Office, 30 MLB clubs, 120 Minor League clubs, players of all levels, and the league's charitable partners to celebrate the country through community service.

According to Jerry Manuel, a former Mets and White Sox manager and current MLB baseball and softball development consultant, the series provides a unique opportunity: 'We want to create an environment where you have others that look like you playing the game. It's about seeing if that could motivate or initiate interest in the game and the culture. I think that’s the biggest thing we’re trying to accomplish.'
Antonio Grissom, head baseball coach at HBCU Morehouse College, echoed Manuel's sentiments, emphasizing the cost barrier that often prevents African American kids from accessing baseball. 'The biggest thing is the cost of it,' he said. 'Travel ball has changed the landscape for African American kids. It costs so much to play baseball these days, and events like this give our kids a chance.'
The DREAM Series alumni are a testament to its success. Notable graduates include 2022 National League Rookie of the Year Michael Harris II of the Braves, Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker, Angels shortstop Christian Moore, Twins pitchers Taj Bradley and Simeon Woods Richardson, and Rangers pitcher Kumar Rocker. These players are a living example of the series' impact, showcasing the potential for growth and success in the sport.
