The Dominican Republic is set to host the Detroit Tigers for two exhibition games in Santo Domingo, just days before the World Baseball Classic kicks off. But here’s where it gets controversial: while these games are a thrilling prelude to the international tournament, Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Rob Manfred insists that hosting regular-season games in the Dominican Republic remains a logistical and financial challenge. During the winter meetings in Orlando, Manfred explained, “The economics of regular-season games are tough in a smaller venue like Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal, which seats only about 13,000 fans. We’d have to replace the home team’s gate revenue, and that’s a tall order in a stadium of this size.” For context, MLB has hosted regular-season games in smaller U.S. venues like Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania (2,500 capacity), and the “Field of Dreams” site in Dyersville, Iowa (7,800 capacity). But the Dominican Republic’s costs are significantly higher, making it a less feasible option—at least for now.
And this is the part most people miss: These exhibition games aren’t just about baseball; they’re a tribute to the victims of the April 8 roof collapse at Santo Domingo’s Jet Set nightclub, where over 200 people lost their lives, including former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and Nelson Cruz’s sister, Nelsy. MLB and promoter UEPA will donate proceeds to the Dominican Red Cross, turning the event into a heartfelt gesture of remembrance and community support.
The games, scheduled for March 3 and 4, were sparked by a conversation between Nelson Cruz, the Dominican Republic’s general manager and a seven-time All-Star, and Omar Minaya, a New York Yankees special assistant. Cruz shared a poignant moment during the announcement: “Every 8th of the month, my mom is deeply affected by the tragedy. I know she’ll be happy about this, and so will the families who lost loved ones that day.”
MLB has a history of playing in the Dominican Republic, with previous exhibitions featuring teams like the Mets, Expos, Tigers, Twins, and Red Sox. This time, MLB is also upgrading the field surface, as they did in 2024. Manfred emphasized, “Playing in the Dominican Republic is a key part of our global expansion efforts, and it’s our way of giving back to a country that has given us so many incredible players.”
Speaking of incredible players, three-time MVP Albert Pujols, the Dominican Republic’s manager, joined Cruz at the press conference.
