Kevin Hassett, who leads the National Economic Council, has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve chair. Yet in a recent interview, he downplayed any real weight President Trump’s opinions would have on how rates are set. Trump has repeatedly argued that his views should matter, citing his track record of profits and influence. But Hassett insisted the Fed preserves its independence, and the chairman’s job is to build consensus within the Federal Open Market Committee, which ultimately votes on policy.
“I’d be happy to talk to the president every day until both of us are gone,” Hassett joked, underscoring the personal rapport he would maintain, even if he held the chair. He also voiced hope that Kevin Warsh, another former Fed governor considered for the role, would similarly engage with the president if he becomes Fed chief. Trump, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, placed Warsh at the top of his list and praised both Warsh and Hassett as capable choices.
The market responded with surprise. In Kalshi’s prediction market, Hassett’s chances of being named Fed chair slipped from about 80% to 50%, while Warsh’s odds rose from roughly 11% to 41%. Trump has signaled he plans to appoint a Fed chair in early 2026, with Powell’s term ending in May. The discussion persists as contenders press their cases ahead of that deadline. The Journal notes a recent White House meeting between Trump and Warsh, where Trump sought assurance that Warsh could support rate cuts.
When asked if Trump’s views would carry equal weight to the FOMC’s voting members, Hassett answered plainly: no. He clarified that the president’s argument would be valuable only if it rested on solid data and sound reasoning. If such arguments are presented to the committee and met with rejection, the committee would vote accordingly.
Hassett has long advocated more aggressive easing and remains one of Trump’s most vocal economic allies. Nevertheless, some of his former colleagues have grown uneasy about the extent to which he may be acting as a political advocate within the administration. He continues to appear regularly on television, defending Trump’s policy priorities and echoing the White House line on inflation and the integrity of federal statistics.
Meanwhile, questions about the Fed’s independence resurfaced after the central bank announced early reappointments of regional presidents, a move critics say could dilute independence as Trump calls for more aggressive rate cuts. The administration had also floated a residency requirement for Fed presidents—a proposal Hassett supported—sparking concerns about a broader leadership shift within the central bank.
