Rivers, a long-time quarterback, last appeared in the NFL during the 2020 season with the Colts, where he started all 16 games. Despite his age (39 at the time), he had a solid campaign, leading the team to an 11-5 record with 4,169 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He added two more touchdowns in the playoffs, but the Colts lost to the Bills. Rivers subsequently retired, but he's been a potential option for quarterback-needy teams in recent years, including the Saints and the Colts, who considered a reunion in 2021. There was even a chance he would make a comeback during Super Bowl LVII, but the 49ers ultimately chose to go with other quarterbacks.
Now, with Jones' injury, the Colts are in a tough spot. Anthony Richardson's uncertain return this year means the team may have to rely on Leonard, who is already dealing with a knee injury. This leaves Brett Rypien as the only healthy quarterback option. Rivers, at 44 years old, would be an interesting choice to save the Colts' season.
