Axelina Johansson, a Swedish powerhouse, has just made history! But it's not just any record she's broken...
Johansson, a senior at the University of Nebraska, has been crowned the NCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week. This prestigious title was awarded after her jaw-dropping performance at the Husker Holiday Open, where she unleashed a shot put throw of 19.72 meters (64 feet and 8.5 inches).
This remarkable feat not only smashed her own school record but also etched her name in the history books of Swedish and NCAA athletics. Yes, you read that right! Johansson's throw is now the new Swedish and NCAA record, leaving everyone in awe.
But here's where it gets even more impressive. This isn't Johansson's first rodeo with records. Earlier this season, she was recognized as a Big Ten Preseason Track and Field Athlete to Watch, and for good reason. On March 1, 2025, she set the previous school record with a throw of 19.31 meters (63 feet and 4.25 inches).
Johansson's talent was also on display at the international stage. At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, she represented Sweden and placed 10th in the shot put competition.
As if her list of achievements wasn't impressive enough, Johansson is now adding another feather to her cap. And this is the part most people miss: she's not done yet! With this new record under her belt, Johansson is poised to dominate her final year as a collegiate athlete.
So, what's next for this record-breaker? The Huskers will be back in action on January 16th and 17th at the Graduate Classic, where Johansson will undoubtedly continue to turn heads and break records. Will she do it again? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: Johansson's journey is far from over, and the world of athletics is eagerly watching.
