A heartfelt tribute has been paid by Anthony Joshua, the renowned heavyweight boxer, to his two close friends who tragically lost their lives in a car crash in Nigeria last month. Joshua, born to Nigerian parents, has chosen a permanent reminder of their friendship by having their names tattooed on his arm.
The names of Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele, both of whom passed away in the crash, are now forever etched on Joshua's skin. Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach, and Ayodele, one of his trainers, were with Joshua in the vehicle when it collided with a truck near Lagos in December.
Joshua, 36, has since returned to the UK and attended the funerals of his friends. He has now added their names to his existing tattoo, which depicts the outline of Africa on his right bicep.
But here's where it gets controversial... Joshua's decision to get this tattoo has sparked a debate about the permanence of such tributes. While some may see it as a beautiful and lasting memorial, others might question the wisdom of inking names onto one's body.
The tattoo parlour, Fulham Tattoo, shared images of the new ink on Instagram, expressing their gratitude for Joshua's visit.
Joshua's emotional journey doesn't end there. In an Instagram video, he spoke openly about the tragedy, expressing his grief and the impact it has had on his life.
He said, 'It's tough. It's really tough. I've lost people before, but I don't think I've lost people throughout this journey that I've been on. It's like you think I'm the big guy but I was walking with giants. Protected.'
Joshua has also vowed to support the families of his friends, stating, 'My goal is to help their families and to help them achieve their goals. I will be saying my prayers and I'm going to help them fulfill their dreams.'
And this is the part most people miss... Joshua's commitment to his friends' families showcases the depth of his character and the importance he places on community and support.
As for his future in boxing, it remains uncertain. While he has shared training footage, his promoter, Eddie Hearn, suggests that Joshua's return to professional competition is not guaranteed.
Hearn said, 'Boxing is a tough sport. You can't just go back into camp with injuries like that. AJ will always train, but at the moment, there is no conversation about a return.'
So, what do you think? Is getting a tattoo a fitting tribute to lost loved ones? And will we see Joshua back in the ring anytime soon? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
