Amen Kate: The Star of Thurles
In a thrilling display of equine prowess, Amen Kate stole the show at Thurles Racecourse, igniting dreams of a Cheltenham triumph for her trainer, Tom Cooper. But here's where it gets controversial...
This daughter of the renowned Augusta Kate, a Grade One winner, faced a challenge after unseating her rider at Punchestown. However, she bounced back with a dominant win in the Billy Harney Memorial Irish EBF Boreen Belle Mares Novice Hurdle, leaving Willie Mullins' Korinthia, the favorite, behind by a comfortable margin.
"She's tough, she stays, and she jumped beautifully," Cooper enthused. "Jack Kennedy said she was right in her comfort zone. It's a real testament to her ability."
And this is the part most people miss: Amen Kate's transformation. According to Cooper, she was a tricky mare last year, but a resolved issue has turned her into a different horse altogether.
"Bryan, my son, has a soft spot for her, and it's no wonder. He bought her, and she's proven to be a wise investment. With her impressive pedigree, including Grade One-winning dam and second-dam, she's a real gem."
With her size and ability to handle various ground conditions, Cheltenham dreams are very much alive. Cooper plans to send her straight to the mares' novice race there in March.
But the story doesn't end there. Jonathan Sweeney's Rushmount, the 11-4 favorite, also impressed under Philip Donovan in the Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Chase. Sweeney praised his horse's performance, especially considering the top weight and tricky race conditions.
"He's a versatile horse, and with his experience and preference for nicer ground, Cheltenham could be on the cards for him too."
